About Supervision

What is Supervision?

The supervisor is responsible for overseeing the counseling practice of the LPC Associate. In addition, they are responsible for providing feedback and guidance to help the LPC Associate grow as a counselor. Supervision focuses on the Associate’s development of personal identity as a counselor, including issues of emotional awareness, motivation, competence, and autonomy.  Supervision is dedicated to building competency through guided readings, case reviews, and supervisor-guided self-assessment. Supervision also involves acting responsibly with personal integrity – on the part of the supervisor and associate. 

What is Required by the state of Texas before starting?

  • Earned Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Family Therapy or related field. (Make sure you have met the curriculum requirements set by the State of Texas).

  • Successful completion of an approved licensing exam and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam.

  • State of Texas approval for proposed internship location.

  • Proof of coverage of liability insurance.

What are the expectations during Supervision?

At a minimum, the supervisor is responsible for the following:​

  • Providing feedback and guidance to the Associate

  • Evaluating the associate’s clinical skills

  • Monitoring the associate’s professional development

  • Accepting limited liability for the practice of Associate

 

At a minimum, the associate is responsible for the following:

  • Regularly meeting with the supervisor to discuss clinical work (4 hours per month for group and individual meetings) and completing all assigned clinical work.

  • Actively participate in supervisory meetings and use the feedback received to improve counseling practices

  • Comply with the standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. This includes following the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for professional counselors.

  • Maintaining professional boundaries with clients

  • Participating in continuing education and training opportunities
